Why the Gig-Zine & Where Did it Come From?

The Gig-Zine was originally published under the Colégas Group. It was intended as a way to send regular updates to college adjunct faculty. Why did we want to do that, you might ask… Well, since adjuncts are often contract employees, we thought that they should be considered part of the gig economy.

“Gigwork” is often seen as temporary, low-skill and low-pay. Obviously many people who work temp or freelance didn’t like this association as it undervalues the work. Adjuncts were no different, so we wanted to change the perception of gig work for them.

As our articles grew in popularity, it became clear that our message was important to not just adjuncts, but also to everyone else in the gig workforce. That is why we decided to open it up to a much larger audience.

The Gig-Zine is now for everyone in the gig economy, from entrepreneurs to Doordash drivers, to eBay sellers, to artists, to independent software developers, and yes, also adjuncts. The fact is they all share the need to build up their business in often very competitive markets.

Because we believe that the gig economy is much larger than what the news media thinks, we are setting out to correct misconceptions about it. It’s been said that the gig economy is a new evolution of labor. Well, we will go a step further and say it is a labor market that is more competitive and more free-enterprise than any before it.

Basically, if you’re on Fiverr or Upwork, you should also be reading the Gig-Zine.
